"They're just baby teeth — they'll fall out anyway." This is one of the most common misconceptions we hear from parents. While it's true that primary (baby) teeth are eventually replaced by permanent teeth, they serve several critical functions during the years they're present.
Baby teeth help children eat properly
Children rely on their baby teeth to chew food for about 6 to 12 years. Decayed or missing teeth can make it painful or difficult for a child to eat, which can lead to poor nutrition during a critical period of growth and development.
They guide permanent teeth into position
Baby teeth act as space holders for the permanent teeth developing beneath the gums. When a baby tooth is lost too early (due to decay or injury), the neighbouring teeth can shift into the empty space. This can cause the permanent tooth to come in crooked, crowded, or in the wrong position — often leading to the need for orthodontic treatment later.
They support speech development
Several speech sounds depend on the tongue making contact with the teeth. Missing or decayed front teeth can affect a child's ability to pronounce certain sounds correctly, potentially leading to speech difficulties during a period when language skills are rapidly developing.
Decay in baby teeth can affect permanent teeth
If a baby tooth develops a severe infection, the infection can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. In some cases, this can cause discolouration, enamel defects, or developmental problems in the adult tooth.
Pain affects everything
A child with dental pain may have difficulty concentrating in school, sleeping at night, or eating properly. Chronic dental infections can also affect overall health. No child should have to live with preventable pain.
What parents should do
- Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears
- Schedule the first dental visit by age 1
- Don't ignore cavities in baby teeth — early treatment prevents complications
- If a baby tooth is lost early, ask your dentist about a space maintainer
- Model good oral hygiene habits — children learn by watching
At Care & Cure Dental Centre, we treat every tooth — baby or permanent — with the same level of care and attention. Because healthy baby teeth lead to healthy permanent teeth, and healthy habits start early.
