What is a dental bridge (FPD) and when do you need one?

Dental bridge (fixed partial denture) procedure

A missing tooth does more than affect your smile. Over time, the gap left by a lost tooth causes the surrounding teeth to shift, alters your bite and can lead to bone loss in the jaw. A fixed partial denture (FPD) — commonly called a dental bridge — is one of the most established and reliable solutions for replacing one or more missing teeth.

What is a fixed partial denture?

A dental bridge is a fixed prosthetic tooth (or teeth) that is permanently anchored to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. These anchor teeth — called abutments — are prepared by removing a thin layer of enamel so that dental crowns can be placed over them. The artificial tooth (called a pontic) is attached between the two crowns, bridging the gap.

The result is a complete unit — a bridge — that is cemented in place and functions like natural teeth. Unlike a removable denture, an FPD stays in at all times and does not require removal for cleaning.

When is a bridge recommended?

  • One or more adjacent teeth are missing
  • The teeth on either side of the gap are healthy enough to serve as anchor teeth
  • The patient prefers a fixed (non-removable) restoration
  • An implant-based solution is not appropriate or preferred

What does the procedure involve?

Treatment is typically completed across two or three appointments. At the first appointment, the abutment teeth are shaped and a precise impression is taken, which is sent to a dental laboratory where the bridge is custom-made. A temporary bridge is placed in the meantime. At the second appointment, the permanent bridge is fitted and adjusted for comfort and bite, then cemented into position.

How long does a bridge last?

With proper care — regular brushing, flossing under the bridge using a floss threader or interdental brush, and routine dental check-ups — a well-made dental bridge can last 10 to 15 years or longer. The longevity of the bridge depends significantly on the health of the supporting teeth and surrounding gum tissue.

Bridge vs implant: what's the difference?

A dental implant replaces the missing tooth root with a titanium post, onto which a crown is placed. It doesn't require modification of adjacent teeth. However, implants involve a surgical procedure and a longer treatment timeline. A bridge is a faster, non-surgical option that is still highly effective and durable. The right choice depends on the clinical situation, bone condition and patient preference — something your dentist will advise on after examination.
